Example

Calculating a Store Sale

Buying a $120 jacket that is 30% off.

  1. Convert the percentage to a decimal: 30% = 0.30.
  2. Calculate the savings amount: $120 ร— 0.30 = $36 saved.
  3. Calculate the final price: $120 - $36 = $84.

Frequently Asked Questions

You cannot just add the percentages (it is not 30% off). You take 20% off the original price, and then take 10% off that new, lower price. A $100 item becomes $80, and then 10% off $80 brings it to $72 (a total discount of 28%, not 30%).
