Formula
Standard Rounding Rule (Half Round Up)If next digit ≥ 5- Round up
If next digit < 5- Keep current digit (round down)
Example
Rounding to the Nearest Hundredth
Round 3.14159 to two decimal places.
- Identify the target place (hundredths): 3.14159 -> the '4'.
- Look at the digit immediately to the right: the '1' in thousandths.
- Because 1 is less than 5, leave the 4 as it is.
- Drop all digits after the hundredths place.
- Result: 3.14.
Frequently Asked Questions
Banker's rounding (or 'round-to-even') is an alternative rule used in accounting where if a number ends in exactly .5, it rounds to the nearest EVEN digit (e.g. 2.5 becomes 2, and 3.5 becomes 4). This calculator uses standard 'half-up' rounding, where .5 always rounds up.
